Why Eat Healthy Avocados?

By: Carol Giambri

Can the avocado be rich in good fats, creamy,  used in salads, dressings or on a sandwich and be good for your hair, eyes and cancer protection?  Yes, you betcha.  I love them.  I am here to share with you some fast ways to include avocados in your diet. Where's the avocado picture? Oops. Maybe another time. But haven't seen their at Farmer's Market ever in Colorado.

My farmer's market guy loves my

Raw Foods for years – my gift to him

Buy them at:

Farmer's Market

Mexican or Asian Markets

Selecting an avocado…

If you are looking to eat it right now then a soft one is great.  Feel it.  Sometimes I even buy some that are so soft, I call ripe, that if you give it a little finger pressure it will crack one and ooze out.  This is okay too.  But you want to use it up fast.

WARNING—Don't store in freezer as it dies.  Okay, what should I do with my 15 organic soft ones I bought the other day?  Tune in as mine are all frozen now or really 13 area.

TIP: ripen avocados in paper bag or foil.  Live and learn.  There are so many tricks and tips that I still don't know but when I hear them you my fans will be the first to know it or them.

The color inside…..

It just means it is ripe and I have loved eating the inside.  Just make sure there is no mold showing up.. If mold cut it out and eat the black spots or pieces inside the avocado. Never got sick from eating any very ripe ones that area black.

Yellow is the most common color inside.

Green inside has been my experience of not ripe.

Benefits and Uses of Avocados…

Benefit 1. Beauty - Hair conditioner recipe

*Mix 1 avocado and 1/2 teaspoon of olive oil & 1 egg yolk mashed together.  Apply to wet or damp hair.  Keep on 20-30 minutes. Massage into scalp. Rinse well with warm water. See the shine and feel the soft hair.

I have never really liked avocado unless it was hidden in a shake..I do however like them with boiled eggs (just the whites), a little vegenaise, sea salt and fresh ground pepper…served on a bed of raw spinach…Our friend Carl gave me this recipe. My daughter calls it avocado happiness :)

Carol, I've always loved avocado but I've never used it as a hair conditioner! Will give it a try! Thank you! Love all your wonderful photos as well! You know your stuff!

I love avocados! Funny story — when I worked for Disney I had lunch at my desk a lot. One day I had an avocado and stuck the knife into the pit. Then I couldn't get the knife out and was tapping the blade on the side of my dish. Next thing I knew, the pit flew off the knife and landed on someone's desk 6 cubicles away.

Oh Becky. That is a very funny story. No kidding I was laughing. That was quite a “ride” for the avocado. Glad it didn’t kill anything — even a plant. Thanks for sharing.

Alexandra, you are always here with such kind words. You are gifted in many areas and hope my readers hunt down your name…worth it all the way!!! It’s only been about 10 years that I discovered an avocado.

Carol, love this article and we love avocados. I've just read Dr. Amen's book about them 2 weeks ago. There are many health benefits. We eat them with sandwich, salad, sliced with salt and pepper and guacamole.

Carol, that's a nice punchy article about avocados. My wife adores them. Love the tips especially the one that it may be a useful in protection against prostrate. One thing I do remember is someone said you can also ripen them by placing them next to a banana! You'll have to confirm that one for me. Thanks a lot!!

Carol, so many uses of avocado! Thank you so much for sharing the healthy tips. I'll be coming back for more! :)

Darn, having read all this good stuff about avocados… I need to scoot and make dinner, and there are hardly any fresh veges and fruits to choose from. Do I hear pasta for yet another night? Ugh, I should have read this in the morning… and then run to the market!

Carol Giambri March 19, 2012 at 8:47 pm

Wow so you are already using it avocados as a hair conditioner. What a natural girl you are Antonina.

Carol Giambri March 19, 2012 at 8:48 pm

See Angelika you are eating something really good for you and just read about its health benefits. Thank you for commenting.

Carol Giambri March 19, 2012 at 8:48 pm

Hope you got to the market and found avocados to already enjoy Diane.

Carol Giambri March 19, 2012 at 8:49 pm

Cool Solvita. Come on back for more health talk. Gardening season is around the corner so you can also eat healthy from a garden–regardless of the size or where too.

Carol Giambri March 19, 2012 at 8:53 pm

Donovan, I usually leave avocados on the counter to ripen. I never heard of ripening an avocado next to a banana however. Let me know how it goes.

Carol Giambri March 19, 2012 at 8:55 pm

Claudia, avocados are super rich and delicious and can make a chocolate pudding out of them too plus fool your friends and family. So many ways to use them. I love guac too.
