Do you feel old and tired? Or young and vibrant as this young one?

Is is true you can age backwards?  Did you ever look at "aging" this way: if you are breathing you are aging? With each new breath comes "another" age even if it is a second–you are still getting older.  Is any reader here in denial like me?  Just today I told my husband I was off to the gym to feel and look younger like a 25 year old. He said "you will never look that young again." I said "well I can at least feel like I am 18–the year I am stuck at out of choice."  No aches, no pains so I can't relate to the AARP generation — some of who may feel old.  My brother-in-law always says he is very old.  He speaks it, he believes it so he feels it.  There is the power of the mind that believes what you say.

The progression of age…

An AARP Beauty – Susan Preston

Let's get into the garden now.  If you don't have one I have suggestions below.   Having mainly eaten from the garden for decades I feel great.  I watched my mother always sick, drugged and die ultimately from the build up of all the toxins she had and the drugs she was "fed" by her doctor.  Every new drug on the market my mother was the "trial" case for. I knew later in life I could have helped her but she always only listened to her doctor who she idolized.  It was her choice.  He was the MD. I am still active as I am aging up there with the AARP generation.  Two hour Zumba monthly classes is a party of clean fun, laughter and dancing which I love.  I am probably the oldest one at the party and in most classes too.

I prefer the garden as my first line of defense for fighting sickness and also keeping it mind for  slowing down the aging process.  Aging backwards can be a mindset.  But being active without aches or pains it seems and feels natural go backwards.  I can't speak on behalf of drugs, surgery or cosmetic things to slow down the aging process or the visual transformation, but I can say gardening is fun, exercise and great way to eat nutritiously fresh foods.

If you have a kid around maybe that will also enhance your aging backwards, but you still can only go right with more garden rich healthy foods shared below.

5 Places to find a garden (depends on the season)…

1. Farmer's Market

2. Store

3. Community Gardens

4. Botanic Gardens or place like that in your area

5. Neighbors

You may not want to mess with a garden but playing with my Action Hoe to knock down the weeds is a challenge as they never leave. I call this fun!  The "Hoe" is a fast and great tool to have around. Find it at hardware or nurseries. I am the the weed wacker in action when I see weeds.

My indoor garden–not edible, but pretty …

Tubes of Lipstick

(see the tubes shooting out)

Wish we had the opportunity to see "lipstick growing" all year round. It does stop at least in my house.  Isn't this "Lipstick" plant amazingly vibrant and colorful. Can you see proud it looks shooting out "lipsticks?"  This plant still remains green during the season. I do use organic lipstick which I  buy at health food store.  Read the labels.

If you feel better and healthier I believe you will turn backwards the aging clock.

Here are 7 garden rich foods that may assist in slowing down your aging…

Chard–use fresh in salads (aids bones)

Almonds – use over salads, smoothies, cooked grains (I see almonds from a tree in the garden)

Tumeric – Use in grains or dressings (osteoporosis helps prevent or slow down)

Red Onions – salads, salsa, grains, sandwiches (asthma, skin congestion aid)

Yams – try garnet, baked, steamed or preferred grated on grains (stomach ulcer, diabetes and more reasons to eat)

Cherries – Bing – fresh as desserts (helps with gout)

Bell Peppers – Use fresh.  Use various colors in salads, cooked grains or in pates. (stroke and heart attack risk prevention).

Can you see I prefer fresh?

Thanks, Carol.  I'm fascinated by health and wellness, but have let myself go down the track of not eating properly of late.  Time to get back it!

Victoria, you will one day get ready and be back on track to your health journey. I never dropped off but many have been where you are. I love playing with food and with a dead oven for over a year, no plans to fix, I tend to do mostly raw foods. I’m here if I can help you come back to “eating properly–without judgment. Thanks for sharing.

Wil, Thanks for sharing. Wow, you got a juicer. What kind. It is run playing with various combinations. Maybe I need to do a blog along the way to help you on some of my favorites. I still keep all very simple.

Claudia Looi August 23, 2011 at 3:48 pm

Carol, love this gardening articles you are writing. Fruits and vegetables do help slow down the age process according to my mom. Great easy simple tips.

Carol Giambri August 24, 2011 at 12:05 am

Thank you Claudia for commenting. It is fun writing and after I finish I have so much more to add always. I just don’t know when “enough is enough.” I can’t imagine banging out a post in 15 minutes–not the way I edit, re-edit and re-edit again and again. Regardless as we breath we are aging so make the most of the “life” we are given and enjoy it.

Great post, Carol. Fresh from the garden, or Farmers Market just tastes better. Eating foods without chemicals and preservatives is the best way to protect our body. Sometimes we need more, but this anti-aging, fiery grandma of four eats her fresh tomatoes right off the vine or when not in season at our house, the Farmers Market. Thanks for sharing with others. Here's to great tasting fruits and veggies year-round.

Carla thanks for your comments. Fresh is always best to my tastebuds and going shopping for them is also “fun” without having all that yucky chemicals an preservatives to keep it supposedly “alive” longer. What’s it doing to our body with that “extension?”
